(1) The taxon vandalusica is here regarded as a potential Evolutionarily Significant Unit (ESU), based on the marked genetic divergence identified by Leonardo Dapporto et al. (2022) in the section dealing with S. spini, between Spanish populations and those occurring elsewhere in Europe.
Confirmation of this status, however, will require further integrative research combining ecological and morphological analyses with higher-resolution genomic approaches, preferably based on whole-genome data.
