Notes
(1) Pending a comprehensive phylogenetic study of all taxa associated with this genus on a worldwide basis, all West Palaearctic species are included in our dynamic checklist within the genus Satyrium Scudder 1876, without subgeneric subdivision. A recent study (Zhang et al. 2019) dealing with the North American species has profoundly reshaped their classification. Only three subgenera were retained, although the habitus of closely related species assigned to the same subgenus may differ markedly (for example Satyrium californica (Edwards, 1862) and S. fuliginosa (Edwards, 1861)). A comprehensive global study will therefore be required to determine whether the Palaearctic and Nearctic species are closely related and should be placed within the same subgenera, or whether they are more distantly related and should be assigned to different subgenera. Given the large number of available genus-group names that could potentially be applied, the main difficulty will then be to determine which names should be retained.
(2) The phylogenetic study of Dapporto et al. revealed rather surprising results for several species, showing marked genetic divergences between geographically separated populations, without apparent intermediates: between Satyrium esculi populations from Morocco and Spain (distance = 15), between S. ilicis from Turkey and Europe (distance = 18), and between S. spini populations from Spain and France (distance = 17). Further studies will therefore be required to assess the specific or subspecific status of several taxa.
